NotesA birth registration was found for George Hicks Farrant: Year of Registration: 1882; Quarter of Registration: Jan-Feb-Mar; District: Stepney (To 1921); County: London, Middlesex; Volume: 1c; Page: 475. (Parents: George Farrant and Mary Ann Hicks.)

On 11 December 1881, George Hicks Farrant was baptised at Saint John, Limehouse Fields, son of George and Mary Ann Farrant,

The family had been abandoned about 1889 by the father, who "was not to be found". He left for his own reasons, apparently regarding his young wife's conduct. Their mother had taken her two boys to Barnardos, and three days later they were taken to Sheppard House. Finally the boys were take to Teighmore Home for Destitute Little Boys in Jersey (1889 to 1892), when they were returned to the Sheppard House prior to being sent to Canada.

In 1891, G. Farrant, 9, and his brother, W. Farrant, 7, are shown as boarders at Teighmores School, Grouville, Jersey, Channel Islands. A notation remarks for all the children "Cannot give place of birth or parentage." (Source: 1891 Channel Islands Census; Class: RG12; Piece: 4698; Folio 14; Page 22; GSU roll: 6099808.)

In 1892, George Farrant, 10 (along with his brother, William Farrant, 8) arrived at Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada, with a group of 303 Barnardo children accompanied by Mr. Owen en route to Toronto, Ontario and Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada.

In 1901, George Farrant, 19, labourer, is shown as a lodger at the home of Irencan(?) and Mary E. Haugh and family (who, at that time were being quarantined with measles). George's date of birth is shown as January 22, 1881, and his immigration year as 1891.

George never got over the trauma he suffered as a home child, and he never forgave his father, although the family were told that he had the better placement.

In 1911, George Farrant, 32, was shown residing at Battleford, Saskatchewan, Canada, along with his wife, Mollie Farrant, 20. His date of birth is shown as August 1875 and his immigration year as 1906.

On July 14, 1916, George Farrant, 34, enlisted in the Canadian Armed Forces. He declared that he resided in New Ufford, Saskatchewan, Canada; that he was born in Slough, Buckinghamshire, England; that his next of kin was his wife, Mary Florence Farrant, who resided in New Ufford, Saskatchewan, Canada; that his date of birth was January 22, 1882; and that he was a farmer. He was described as 5 foot 4 inches in height; ruddy complexion; brown eyes; dark brown hair. He was a member of the Church of England. He had a scar on his right leg, slightly to the left of the kneecap. George Farrant was discharged from the service on February 13, 1917, as medically unfit.

George finally settled in Burnaby, British Columbia, Canada. He and Mollie raised 3 daughters, Majorie, Eva and Thelma.

George Hicks Farrant died at the age of 90 on August 16, 1972, in Burnaby, British Columbia, Canada (Reg. No. 1972-09-011607).
